What is a Democrat?

I'm sure you have all seen that donkey up there before (but if you haven't, it's the symbol for the Democratic Party.) But what does it really stand for? It doesn't only represent what one of the candidates for the president is. It shows their ideas, what they believe we should make this country into. That little animal stands for a whole country of people, waiting to be heard and waiting for changes. And this year, that animal also stands for Al Gore.

Democrats issues and beliefs

Most democrats believe more strongly in labor and not as much in work force benefits. Their belief is that people with lower financial disadvantages should be the ones helped, instead of not helping them out as much, and helping other people whose financial status is stable. Another issue is taxes. The Democratic Party also believes that taxes should be paid to sponsor programs lowering prices for less able people, and improving defense, transportation, safety, and many other areas needed. They also believe we should be more unified as a country and make laws and programs for the entire nation. Though these are the qualities of most democrats, many of these might not be enforced, even if a democratic candidate is elected. It is up to the individual candidate to decide what he or she wants to do with the country.

A little about Al Gore

Al Gore was born in Washington, DC. His father was the senator of Tennessee, and his mother was a lawyer her husband's helping mate. Obviously, he grew up around politics.

Later on in his life, he graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Politics with honors, and directly after, enlisted in the United States Army. While enrolled, he went to fight in the Vietnam War. When he returned, he settled in Carthrage, Tennessee with his wife, Tipper. He had his political debut when he became the representative of Tennessee for the House of Representatives. Afterwards, in 1984, he was elected to the senate, and he was re-elected in 1990. In 1992, he decided to quit and spend more time with his family, with eight years of experience in senate. A few months later, he was asked to be running mate for Bill Clinton. He was elected for office as vice-president, and reelected in 1996. In 1999, he was the final nominee for the democrats in the presidential election of November 2000. He is running against republican George W. Bush. In that election, you should vote for Al Gore. On the next page are some of his ideas and views on the topics of taxes/budget, crime, and education.
